Hayes & Yeading United finished the season safe but beaten, losing the final fixture of the season to Wrexham by a single goal at Church Road.
Manager Garry Haylock with safety guaranteed took the chance to give Charlie Wassmer his first start in a United shirt after his two minute cameo at Salisbury City a couple of weeks ago.
The side from North Wales
started well creating a couple of early openings. Mark Jones cross from the right side was met by Adrian Cieslewicz but his header was off target and then minutes later Jones picked off a loose Wassmer pass and advanced on goal, firing over from 18 yards.
With ten minutes played United's first chance fell to Craig Watkins who received a Justin Cochrane pass and chipped the ball ahead for his own volley but Wrexham keeper Chris Maxwell was well placed to hold on to the ball.
United's best chance of the game came on 21 minutes when Wassmer played the ball down the right to James Mulley who raced away from an injured Aaron Brown before crossing to Watkins at the far post, his diving header going back across goal and inches wide of the upright.
Three minutes later with the visitors down to ten men and waiting to replace Brown, a defensive mix up gifted them a goal from nothing. Ed Harris was first to a bouncing ball only for his header back to Clark Masters to fall short, then having got to the ball first Master's clearance went straight to Wes Baynes who controlled and fired past the stopper and into the bottom corner from 25 yards despite Tom Cadmore's despairing effort to clear on the line.
Going behind seemed to really knock United out of their stride as the visitors took command for the remainder of the half with Cieslewicz particularly dangerous. Firstly his near post cross from the right was back-heeled by Andy Mangan at the near post but Masters was sharp enough to dive on the ball and then a minute later he picked out Baynes but his header was plucked from the air by Masters.
In stoppage time a shot following a short free-kick led to a scramble in the United area but after a couple of blocked shots the ball was cleared and the break arrived.
The second half in all reality never got going with the game being played out to a conclusion with very little goalmouth incident and any their was came in favour of the visitors.
Masters was on hand to easily grasp another Mangan header before Baynes went close from 25 yards with a dipping effort that just cleared the bar.
The only real close call in the second 45 came on 74 minutes when Cieslewicz played Jones on goal, his drive towards the top corner being well tipped over by Masters. The resultant corner taken by Baynes caused a little more trouble as Mangan got his head to the ball and Adam Green was required to head wide off the line.
And there ends our first season in the top flight, have a great summer break, when are the fixtures out??
