Edgware Town 2

Hayes & Yeading’s young hopeful’s progressed to the quarter-finals of the Middlesex Senior Jeff Ritson Youth Cup at the SKYex on Wednesday evening with what turned out to be a hard fought 3-2 victory over an Edgware Town side who almost recovered from a three goal deficit.

United were quickly on the front foot with neat move on nine minutes seeing the ball moved down the right side by Jake Sobalak, he found Nana Adarkwa inside and he in turn fed Elijah Manning but his shot was too high to trouble Ilia Siaka in the visitors goal.

Three minutes later though United di break the deadlock, Sobalak this time popping up on the left, he drifted inside past Reece Bartolomew and fired goalwards, Siaka did well to push out his strike only for Adarkwa to be quickest to the loose ball, stooping to head home from close range.

While United held a larger proportion of possession, it was not until the 28 minute mark that another noteworthy chance came and along with it came United’s second strike of the evening with the same triumvirate as the first noted chance being involved. This time it was Adarkwa who found space on the right, he pulled the ball square to Sobalak who saw his effort pushed out by Siaka, again United were quickest to the rebound with Manning smacking the ball home off the underside of the crossbar from close range.

The half hour mark saw the first real action for Alex Ravenhill in the United goal although he comfortably fielded a 20 yard drive from Edgware striker Ikenna Okechukwu.

United were soon to go three up, again courtesy of a rebound after Siaka had produced a fine save, this time the Edgware stopper kept out a Manning drive with Sobalak pouncing quickly to touch the ball home.

As the break arrived and with a three goal cushion, United seemed to take their foot off the pedal a little and almost conceded when Ladi Okunwobi made space for himself in the United box and fired the ball across the middle of the six yard box without finding a teammate in attendance close by. This let off only lasted 60 seconds though as a slack pass in midfield saw the ball snatched by the visitors who threaded it through to Okechukwu who confidently slid the ball past Ravenhill’s outstretched hand to reduced the arrears at the break.

I’m not sure what happened at the break, whether United relaxed too much, whether Edgware upped their game or maybe a combination of both but the visitors from north London were certainly to be found in the ascendancy in the second half.

Within the opening 15 minutes Edgware created two good openings, the first falling to Bartholomew who raced into the six yard box before seeing his shot deflected wide by Lugnius Zalpys and minutes later Ravenhill did well to hold a stinging effort from distance by Okunwobi.

As we entered the final 20 minutes, a rare United chance fell to Sobalak who collected from Zalpys, the attacking midfielders effort being well defended by a Lexus Breeden tackle but minutes later United were opened up on the right side of the defence as the ball was pulled back to Okechukwu who slotted his shot beyond Ravenhill in to the far corner to reduce the arrears to just a single strike.

As the game reached the 90 minute mark Josh Blaze and Simeon Olarein combined to open up a chance for Mustafa Ahmadi who saw his shot on the turn go inches wide and then two minutes into stoppage time Okechukwu had a great chance to force extra time and grab a hat-trick when he moved onto a neat Abraham Oduh flick, fortunately for United the striker lost his composure and blasted the ball over the top leaving United to progress to the next round.
